PURPOSE:To prevent the running performance of a vehicle from being aggravated by maintaining a lock-up mechanism at an inoperative condition while an engine is being controlled to be changed in output in order to relax shock due to shifting of an automatic transmission. CONSTITUTION:While an engine is being controlled to be changed in output in order to relax shifting shock due to shifting operations of an automatic transmission by means of a shifting control means, a lock-up prohibition means makes a lock-up control means control a lock-up mechanism in such a way as to be kept inoperative. Such control as described above permits a torque converter to increase torque functionally so that sufficient driving force can be transmitted to wheels even if the output of the engine is lowered because of shifting shock relaxation control. This constitution can thereby prevent the running performance of a vehicle from being aggravated.
