The subject of the present invention is trolleys for automatic handling of heavy loads placed in containers 2 or on pallets, with bilateral distribution. One of the main applications of the invention is the handling of large-capacity containers in postal sorting offices. The said trolley includes a main structure 1 in the form of a gantry 10 with one or two loading stations 9 along an axis which is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the main trolley and open on both sides. These two loading stations each receive an auxiliary trolley 11 itself rolling along the ground, possessing a lifting table 12 which can slide under the containers 2 and having supply and control sources which are reloaded from the main trolley. The supporting structure 10 includes means 13 for taking on board the said auxiliary trolley 11 when the latter is in position under the gantry 10. The auxiliary trolleys 11 may move quite far away from the main trolley 1 on either side of the axis of travel of the latter and allow a bilateral distribution of the containers 2. <IMAGE>
