Prodn. of iron castings with compact graphite

The process consists of (a) charging a furnace with casting metal low in sulphur (0.005-0.012%) such as scrap iron, and placing a compacting or vermiculising iron alloy contg. a suitable amount of magnesium to modify the graphite morphology in a converter; (b) pouring the furnace contents into the converter so that reaction takes place between the liquid metal and the alloy, returning it subsequently to the furnace and heating to a suitable temp.; (c) pouring the furnace contents into a ladle and inoculating it with a ferro-silica compsn. which modifies the matrix; and (d) holding the liquid metal for a time to stabilise the compact graphite and casting it into moulds for the required parts.
