Catalytic reduction of traces of oxides of nitrogen in gas streams, esp. those emitted by power stations, fuel-burning installations and nitric acid plants, is achieved by use of ammonia as a selective reducing agent, and catalysts contg. up to 70 wt.% modified sepiolite with oxides of titanium, vanadium and tungsten. The catalysts have excellent mechanical properties and high efficiency, the sepiolite acting as both carrier and catalyst, having a good surface area and suitable porosity for distribution of the oxides. They can be made in conventional shapes, e.g. pellets or extrusions, or in tubes, sheets, honeycombs, etc.
