To reduce the pollutant content of the waste gases of an atmospheric gas burner fed with a gas/primary-air mixture, that region (B) of the combustion space which is situated above the region (A) of the flame roots is supplied with cooled secondary air. In the case of a gas burner suitable for carrying out this method, secondary-air ducts (6), which enclose refrigerant-conveying hollow spaces (16), are provided on both sides of a burner plate (1) penetrated by mixture outlet openings (3). In the case of a sectional boiler suitable for carrying out this method, the boiler sections (19) comprise a water-conveying part which bounds the combustion space (20) at the underside and encloses a combustion chamber (2) bounded by a burner plate (1). This burner plate forms the bottom of a trough (14) which is laterally bounded by upward-projecting side walls (15) which extend into the region of the burner flames (4) and form secondary air ducts (6). <IMAGE>
