Clothes washing machine is operated automatically, and involves the use of a wash tub (3) and a water storage tank (15) interconnected for to-and-fro water transfer, specifically by a pump (18) and a control valve (17). A wash cycle comprises filling the tub and allowing clothes to soak for predetermined time with little or no agitation, transferring water to the storage tank, returning the water to the wash tub, and spin-drying while draining the tub. Pref. transfer and return is repeated before spin-drying.
