Process and apparatus for producing construction elements from textile carpet waste material

In the known process, rod- or plate-shaped construction elements are produced from textile carpet waste material by dividing the latter into chips, granulating, and providing the granules in succession with the two components of the polyurethane acting as binder. This mixture is compression-moulded and cut into the desired lengths. To obtain a more convenient process which leads to a product of great uniformity and strength, it is proposed that the carpet chips be initially ground and then surface-melted, before being simultaneously provided with the two components of a latently further-crosslinkable polyurethane. The mix is then compression-moulded and the moulding is finally subjected to a concluding heat treatment which is used to cure the polyurethane to form a thermoset.
