A solution useful as a moistening agent for sealing items such as gummed envelopes is disclosed. The solution has 2 to 25 parts per million of a quaternary ammonium compound as an anti-microbial agent in water for preventing slime formation and quantities of the agent are limited to assure the surface tension of the moistening solution is not deleteriously affected. Such moistening solutions may be used in devices such as mailing machines for the purpose of sealing envelopes. <IMAGE>
