The invention relates to a hollow-beam electron gun for generating a hollow electron beam having a low-scattering transverse velocity component, in which the precondition is created by the electrode geometry and in particular by the position of the electron emission ring that leaving electrons initially strongly interact only with a present electrical field. The formation of space charges in front of the electron emission ring causes no deterioration of the beam property. The scattering of the transverse velocity of the electrons in the beam is low. The electron current can be switched by the electrode arrangement.
