The disc-shaped housing (1) of the rotors (2,3) has a cylindrical inner section (4) from which triangular struts (17) extend outwards and downwards to an annular outer section (7) of, eg carbon fibre reinforced plastics material. Both rotors are driven by a common power unit (8) and pinion (19) in mesh with inner drive rings (12), and are stabilised by guides (10) for outer rollers (34) at the tips of their blades (14). Control is exercised through a pair of joysticks (25,26) linked to electronic circuitry for servo operation (18) of tangentially-disposed slats (16) on 30-deg sectors of the underside of the housing. ADVANTAGE - Economic operation over longer distances feasible with simplified control involving no foot-pedal operations. Rotationally symmetrical structure is simpler and single sectors can be mfd in unitary fashion.
