The gas to be treated (8) is cooled (46, 2a) to a temperature below the dew point of the water it contains to produce a current of condensed water (7) and a cold gas (5a) free of water. The gas is washed (3) by means of an absorbent liquid which fixes the H2S to form a charged absorbent liquid, which is regenerated and then recycled (26, 10) to the washing, and a purified gas (9b). The purified gas is rehydrated (4) by contact with a current of water (44) containing the condensed water (7) and possibly other residual water and having a temperature sufficient to form a rehydrated purified gas containing a quantity of water substantially equal to that of the gas to be treated and of any added residual water.
