A master cylinder suitable for the actuation of a hydraulic clutch of an automotive vehicle, comprises a cylinder housing (1) and a piston (2), the housing and piston being made of plastics. The master cylinder includes a plastics element (3) for guidance of the piston (2). The guide element is sleeve-shaped and is combined with other components to form an assembly positioned within the cylinder housing (1) by means of two compression springs (10, 12). Positioning takes place simultaneously with the mounting of the master cylinder to the bulkhead of the vehicle. The length of the piston can be reduced to the very minimum under injection moulding technique aspects whilst maintaining the stroke unvaried. <IMAGE>
