The invention relates to a process, integrated in a methanol synthesis, for the preparation of dimethyl ether by catalytic dehydration of methanol over a gamma -Al2O3 catalyst which preferably contains small amounts of SiO2 and purification of the dehydration product by adding the latter to a distillation column to recover pure dimethyl ether.
