Rapidly rotating drive units, for example for spindles in the textile industry, are welded or soldered on both sides of the stator (1) of the driving electric motor to bearing shells (5) consisting of porous sintered metal, and the bearing shells are subsequently machined to size and possibly sealed (6) on their surface, to be precise in a clamping device, in order to ensure correct alignment of the bearing surfaces. The shaft (2) with the integrated rotor (3) is not machined to size, in the same manner, until it has been installed. It is thus possible to implement narrow bearing gaps, which result in the gas bearings having a stable and vibration-free behaviour.
