A motor vehicle door lock has a lock catch, a detent pawl and a lock mechanism (1), in which the lock mechanism (1) comprises, inter alia, an external release lever (4), an internal release lever, and, if appropriate, an external securing lever (5) and an internal securing lever (6), the internal securing lever (6) is coupled to the external release lever (4) for freeing in the unlocking position and idle stroke in the securing position, and the external release lever (4) in the unlocking position acts on the detent pawl via an intermediate lever (7) or on a carrier pin on the detent pawl or the like, and in which the intermediate lever (7) is articulated pivotably at one end and is also displaceable in the direction of its longitudinal axis. The lock has an intermediate lever which is particularly suitable for certain assembly conditions and operates in a particularly suitable way, in which an anti-theft securing function can also be particularly expediently integrated, the intermediate lever (7) having a laterally open recess (8) with a force application surface (9) extending approximately transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis, and the external release lever (4) has a carrier nose (10) lying alongside or in the recess (8) at the level of the force application surface (9) when the external release lever (4) is in the starting position, and the intermediate lever (7) is spring-loaded in the direction of the carrier nose (10) and is held at a distance from the carrier nose (10) counter to the spring force in the securing position of the internal securing lever (5). <IMAGE>
