A N-acyl amino acid derivative having the formula:

wherein R<1> represents an alkyl group, and R<2> represents a straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group, or a straight-chain or branched chain alkyl group substituted by a carboxyl group; or R<1> and R<2>, together with the carbon atom to which they bond, form a ring structure optionally substituted by an alkyl group; or R<1> and R<3>, together with the carbon atom to which they bond, form a vinylidene group optionally substituted by one or two straight-chain or branched chain alkyl groups; R<3> represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and R<4> represents a halogen atom, and salts thereof.
These compounds have a selective herbicidal effect.
