In a text station, for instance a teleprinter, to guide the operator, processing menus for processing functions to be carried out and contents lists for documents to be processed are displayed. According to the invention, a processing menu and the associated contents list of documents are displayed simultaneously on the screen of a display device, so that after a single image has been built on the screen, both the desired function and the desired document can be selected. Either the processing function is selected first and then the associated document, or the document is selected first and then the desired processing function.
