PURPOSE: To increase the yield of argon by compressing gaseous crude argon, vaporizing liquid crude argon and introducing the vaporized argon thereby avoiding loss of gaseous crude argon. CONSTITUTION: A majority of crude argon from a crude argon column 2 is passed through a duct 4 and taken out in liquid form. After it is vaporized in a heat exchanger 6, hydrogen is fed from a duct 8 and oxygen contained in the crude argon is reduced to water in a reactor 9. Water is separated in a dryer 10 and then cooled in a heat exchanger 11 before being introduced into the bottom of a pure argon column 13 and mostly liquefied. The part of crude argon is passed through a duct 5 and taken out in gaseous form, subjected to cooling compression (by a compressor 19) in the heat exchanger 6 and introduced to the crude argon. Returned gas containing hydrogen is compressed together in the compressor 19.
