PURPOSE: To separate the air efficiently by subjecting cryogenic air to fractional distillation to form O2 , N2 gas and Ar rich O2 , separating Ar in another column of lower pressure, partially liquefying N2 gas through compression, remixing liquid O2 and impure N2 in a liquid-vapor contact column and then expanding a part thereof to attain a low temperature. CONSTITUTION: Air is fed to the inlet 16 of a lower column 4 and liquid O2 is obtained from the bottom outlet 24. Ar-rich flow from an outlet 29 is subjected to fractional distillation in a column 10 and liquid Ar is obtained from an outlet 52. The columns 4, 10 are operated at 6 and 1.3 atm, for example. A part of impure N2 from the top 26 of the column 4 is purified in an upper column 6 and other part 15 fed to the bottom of a column 14 and remixed with liquid O2 from the outlet 24. O2 -N2 flow close to the air is sampled from an intermediate pipe 34 and expanded to attain a low temperature thus enhancing the operational efficiency of the column 14.
