Gel microdroplets, and means for formation therefor, are disclosed, wherein such gel microdroplets have two or more distinguishable gel or liquid regions. Composite gel microdroplets provide means for segregating first biological entities from second biological entities within one gel microdroplet, and for similarly segregating biological entities, marker entities such as fluorescent beads, and force coupling entities such as magnetic particles, from other entities within one gel microdroplet. This invention further relates to general means for providing physical, chemical or biological external influence on biological entities, wherein biological entities contained within microdroplets are changed in position so as to reversibly move microdroplets to a location near a source of external influence, maintain microdroplets near the source, and to move microdroplets into a measurement apparatus. A process for determining the number of analyte molecules in a sample by a homogeneous specific binding assay is also disclosed. |
