The optical contact is improved by forming a film of a phototackifiable compsn. between a face plate and phosphor in a colour picture tube. At least one run of exposing the film to actinic radiation in a pattern is conducted and the exposed film is contacted with phosphor so as to form a resulting patternwise phosphor layer (1). The layer (1) is impregnated with a transparent inorganic material (3) having a refractive index of 1.2 to 2.0. The material (3) fills the voids of the layer (1) so as to improve the optical contact. The phospher layer (1) is aluminised and the face plate having the phosphor layer is baked.
