PURPOSE:To obtain the title composite material excellent in mechanical strength, elastic modulus, resistance to heat and oxidation, and breaking toughness by incorporating inorganic fiber in a matrix comprising, as essential components, silicon and nitrogen, and, as nonessential components, oxygen, carbon or specific metal (s). CONSTITUTION:The objective composite material can be obtained by incorporating 5-75vol% of inorganic fiber in a matrix comprising, as essential components, silicon and nitrogen and, as nonessential components, at least one substance selected from oxygen, carbon and metal (at least one selected from group and groups IIa and III-V metallic elements). Said matrix is a ceramic having the following atom ratio: N/Si: 0.04-3, O/Si <=15; C/Si <=7; M/Si <=9 (where M is said metal). |
