PURPOSE:To reduce load of a speed change clutch and a brake and to improve durability by providing a load reducing brake on the input member side of an automatic transmission mechanism portion and operating the brake in a slip state during up-shift speed change. CONSTITUTION:Turning force is input to an automatic transmission mechanism portion 14 through an input shaft 18. A load reducing brake 12 is provided on the input shaft 18, and the input shaft 18 can be locked to a stationary portion. Oil pressure is set so that even if the maximum braking force is applied to the load reducing brake 12, it is retained in a slip state and not completely fastened. Thus, the input shaft 18 is subjected to designated frictional force from the load reducing brake 12 during speed change operation to be put in a decelerating state. Accordingly, heat generated in the speed change clutch can be remarkably reduced so as to improve durability of the speed change clutch and lessen a speed change shock.
