A long workpiece (2) with two end sections (5, 10) and a central section (3) lying between them which has a narrower cross-section than the end sections (5, 10), is fabricated from a blank (1) in such a way that only one part (3a) of the central section (3) is given, for example by machining, the final cross-sectional shape, and in such a way that the remaining part of the central section (3) receives a final cross-sectional shape by cold forming using a multi-part reducing mould (4). The part (3a) of the central section (3) which has its cross-section reduced first allows the mould parts (4a, 4b) of the multi-part reducing mould (4) to be placed around this part (3a), and the remaining part of the central section (3) is then cold-pressed through the reducing mould (4).
