In the automatic charging of working machines with plate-type workpieces, there is a problem, inter alia, of monitoring the charging for the presence of doubles. The thickness measurements so far disclosed in this connection, which are based on inductive measurement principles, cannot be applied for all materials. In a monitoring device (2) according to the invention, contact measurement of a workpiece (4) is performed by means of rolling members (23) which are accommodated in two retaining plates (11, 17) arranged one above another. At a spacing from the said retaining plates (11, 17) an electric measuring device (30) is arranged by means of which the spacing between the retaining plates, which is influenced by the thickness of the workpiece (4) located between the rolling members (23), is preferably scanned in a contactless fashion. Because of the spatial separation of the electric measuring device (30) and the contact scanning of the workpiece (4), the monitoring device (2) can be used independently of the type of the respective material of which the workpiece (4) consists. <IMAGE>
