A single spindle automatic turret lathe comprises a base 4 having a machine bed 5 at the front thereof, a beam 8 carried by the base above and to the rear of the bed 5, a carriage 10 suspended from the underside of the beam and carrying a turret 9, and an opening 12 formed in the base below the turret and behind the bed to permit the passage of chips produced during a machining operation.
