An externally heat insulated liquefied gas storage tank has a heat insulated ceiling 17, Fig. 1, extending across and within the tank wall 14 at a level above that of the stored liquid and is suspended by hangers 22 from a roof 12 which extends over the ceiling 17 and is at ambient temperature. As shown the ceiling 17 is of porous bands of heat insulating material and is sealed to the rim of wall 14 by an annular member 18 and the roof 12 is supported by an outer container wall 11. In a modification the ceiling 17 is lined with an impervious skin and the seal 18 dispensed with. In a further modification the ceiling 17, Fig. 3, is supported by a roof 21 which is itself supported by the container wall 14 and the external insulation 16 is tapered at 26 so as to provide a suitable temperature gradient whereby the roof 21 may be at ambient temperature. The outer container may be dispensed with. |
