Known electrical switching apparatuses have a switching apparatus base as well as manual operating elements which can be placed or plugged thereon and are used as rocker or toggle elements for acting on the contact point in the switching apparatus base. In this case, a disturbing effect is that the toggle or rocker elements project out of the plane of the mounting surface. A novel manual operating element for an electrical switching apparatus having a switching apparatus base, which element is guided in the base, converts the translational movement, which is carried out by pressing the control surface of the manual operating element (10, 11) down onto the switching apparatus base (10), into a tilting movement by means of a pivoted lever (30), and moves back into its original position, parallel to the mounting surface, by resetting by means of a resetting spring (42).
