A sliding roof for a passenger car has a frame for the inside roof lining which does not need to be lifted in order to retract the sliding roof. To ensure that the lower surface of the frame is essentially flush with the lower surface of the inside roof lining when the roof is closed, without having to provide a lifting mechanism for the frame so that the sliding roof can be retracted as desired, the frame (7) has raised edges ridges (8) along its front and side edges, which ensure that the frame (7) is flush with the inner roof lining (4) of the vehicle when the sliding roof (3) is closed, and the rear edge (9) of the frame (7) is essentially flat and overlaps the corresponding edge of the inner roof lining (4) of the vehicle.
