The process serves for purifying a crude gas for the ammonia synthesis by means of a nitrogen scrub. For this purpose, the crude gas is cooled down in a first stage, partly condensed and subjected to a separation. The liquid fraction arising, which mainly contains CH4 and CO, is taken off, while the gaseous fraction alone is subjected to the nitrogen scrub. Due to the low methane concentration in the gaseous fraction, the nitrogen scrub can be run at a temperature below the solidification point of methane. <IMAGE>
