Capacitor ignition system for internal combustion engines, especially for lawnmowers, chainsaws, abrasive disc cutters or the like, with a permanent-magnet generator and an ignition pulse generator for the connection of an electronic switch, discharging the capacitor by way of the primary winding of the ignition coil, the ignition pulse generator, triggered by the permanent-magnet generator and provided with a tachometer, by way of a stored ignition characteristics program, producing a speed-dependent retardation of the ignition pulse compared to the permanent-magnet generator pulse, and the ignition characteristics program containing different advance curves for identical speeds in different operating conditions, a switching device monitoring the operating condition being provided, in order to switch over from a starting advance curve with increasing advance as the speed increases to an operating advance curve with increasing advance as the speed falls on attainment of a predetermined speed, a timer element, activated by the engine shut-down, switching back to the starting advance curve after a predetermined shut-down time of the engine and the reversal point for the advance curves being situated below the idling speed.
