The equipment comprises an inclined reactor space 3 with a reactor bottom of fixed sections 5 and of sections 6 which are movable transversely thereto. The gasification material 12 is gasified on this reactor bottom 5, 6 during stationary phases and advancing phases, partially in countercurrent, and partially displaced in the longitudinal direction of the reactor space 3 with a rearrangement of the reaction zones 21-24 which form during the stationary phases. The gasifying agent 18 is introduced in transverse flow through the reactor bottom 5, 6 and additionally, in a part quantity, vertically at the lower end 19 of the reactor space 3. The process gas being formed above the loose layer 20, which becomes steadily thinner in the longitudinal direction of the reactor space 3, is discharged via a gas take-off branch 9 which extends into the reactor space 3.
