The invention relates to a locking device consisting of a flat key (2) and of a lock cylinder (1) which has at least one tumbler lying in the longitudinal plane of the keyway and sensing the narrow side of the flat key as well as further tumblers (21) which extend transversely relative to the longitudinal plane of the keyway of the cylinder plug (7) and sense the wide side of the key and which are formed by core pins (26) seated in core bores and by housing pins (27) spring-loaded in housing bores, the flat key possessing, on the wide sides and the narrow side of its shank, locking depressions for the entry of the core-pin ends, and the key shank being subdivided into a first region adjacent to the key tip and a second region adjoining this, in such a way that the first region has the wide-side locking depressions. For the purpose of transferring the pin arrangement to a commercially available profile cylinder, the invention proposes that the lock cylinder (1) be designed as a profiled cylinder (3) and its cylinder plug (7) have a smaller diameter level with the first region (A) than level with the second region (B), and that the cylinder housing (G) have, level with the first region (A), an insert (20) for the guidance of the wide-side tumbler pins (21). <IMAGE>
