Compounds of formula (I): wherein R<1> is hydrogen or an amino protecting group, R<2> is a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or cycloalkyl group, aryl or an optionally substituted heterocyclyl group, and R is a group CHR OCOR, wherein R is hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, C3-7 cycloalkyl, methyl or phenyl, and R is C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy, phenyl, optionally substituted with -NH COCHRNH2, benzyl, C3-7 cycloalkyl, or C1-6 alkyl C3-7 cycloalkyl; or R and R together form a 1,2-phenylene group optionally substituted by one or two methoxy groups, wherein R represents hydrogen or C1-6 alkyl, are useful in the treatment of bacterial infections.
