PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory output image even for a copy containing a mixture of pictures and characters by providing two different output pattern selectors suited for a picture portion and a character portion and selecting an optimum pattern in accordance with a region separation signal. CONSTITUTION:Pattern selectors 12 suited for a character portion and a picture portion select an optimum output pattern by a region identification signal from a picture/character region identification section 13. The selectors 12 select patterns, referring to a ROM table 14 in which quinary data of adjacent four pixels including highlighted pixels set in latches 2-5 and pattern codes of highlighted pixels to be output to addresses designated by a region identification signal are stored. If the region signal indicates a character region, an output pattern of highlighted pixels is decided so that the dense portion collects to the higher one of right and left pixel levels. If the region signal is for a picture region, an output pattern of the highlighted pixels is decided according to a specified algorithm. Consequently, a satisfactory output image can be obtained even for a copy containing a mixture of pictures and characters. |
