PURPOSE:To correctly extract a stroke by comparing the width and the direction of a stroke with regard to each stroke passing through a superposed area and separating the stroke, based on a result of comparison. CONSTITUTION:A superposed area of a stroke of an image pattern F is detected by a detecting circuit 12, and thereafter, with regard to all the superposed areas that have been detected, the width and the direction of the stroke in the vicinity of each superposed area are extracted by an extracting circuit 13, the width and the direction of each stroke which has been extracted are compared, and based on a result of its comparison, the superposed stroke in those superposed areas is separated. Accordingly, it becomes unnecessary to generate a rule for extracting the stroke in advance, and also, it becomes also unnecessary to pay attention to a variation of a shape of an end point of the stroke and the width and the direction of the stroke. In such a way, the stroke can be separated and extracted exactly from an arbitrary character or graphic. |
