METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RAPIDLY FREEZING MOLTEN METALS AND METALLOIDS IN PARTICULATE FORM

Metals and metalloids are rapidly solidified in particulate form by (a) feeding a volatile liq. coolant to the center of rotation of a rapidly rotating horizontal disc to form an outwardly flowing film of the coolant over the disc upper surface and (b) feeding molten material into the film at a distance spaced from the center of rotation of the disc so that the molten material is cooled by vaporisation of the coolant in a centrifugal forces. Use of a voltage liq. coolant in a centrifugal disc atomiser gives rapid cooling with minimal coolant amounts and ensures that most of the components of the apparatus are at or near the b.pt. of the coolant used.
