Carbon monoxide containing gas, in contact with a material capable of catalysing the reversion of CO to CO2 + C, is heated up through the temperature range conducive to carbon monoxide rfeversion (900 DEG to 1300 DEG F.) in a period of time less than 1 second by reacting a sufficient portion of the gas with oxygen. The carbon monoxide containing gas is preferably preheated to below 900 DEG F. and the oxygen containing gas is preferably preheated to 1000 DEG to 1500 DEG F. The carbon monoxide containing gas may be reacted with an amount of oxygen by eitherwithdrawing a portion of the CO gas, reacting with O2 and remixing the exhaust gases with the remainder of the CO containing gas, or the O2 may be mixed with the whole of the CO gas, reacting with enough of it, in the presence of the rest, to raise the temperature to the required level.
|
