PURPOSE:To improve oxidation resistance of a carbon-containing refractory composed of a refractory aggregate and a carbonaceous raw material at a specific weight ratio, without lowering the corrosion resistance, spalling resistance, etc., by adding a specific amount of aluminum dodecarborate to the carbon-containing refractory. CONSTITUTION:A refractory material composed of (A) 65-95wt.% of a refractory aggregate (e.g. alumina or magnesia) and (B) 35-5wt.% of a carbonaceous raw material (e.g. flaky graphite or silicon carbide) is prepared beforehand. The objective carbon-containing refractory can be produced by adding 0.5-7pts. wt. of aluminum dodecarborate to 100pts.wt. of the refractory material, kneading together with a binder (e.g. tar), molding under pressure and heat-treating the product. The reaction of formula takes place between the aluminum dodecarborate and oxygen in air on the surface of the refractory in use and the surface of the refractory is covered with molten boron oxide produced by the reaction to prevent the oxidation of the carbonaceous raw material. |
