A fire engine has an extending ladder (1) which is mounted on a turntable (5) which rotates about a nominally vertical axis (3). The ladder is mounted on a frame (7) which pivots about an axis (8) which is at right angles to the vertical axis. The ladder is pivoted to this bracket (7) by a horizontal bolt (11). The ladder can be swung about this bolt (11) by a hydraylic cylinder (14) so that the ladder rungs can be brought to a horizontal position irrespective of the angle (alpha) at which the vehicle platform is inclined to the horizontal.
