The process includes transmitting to the following vehicle (2) an infrared control beam (10). This beam is detected by a sensor (7) on the front of the following vehicle, and applied to a control circuit (9). The control circuit then responds by transmitting an ultrasound signal (11). The leasing vehicle includes circuitry to calculate the time interval between the transmission of the test IR beam, and the reception of the returning ultrasound. From this information the distance separating the two vehicles is determined. An indication of the distance (12) is displayed in the leading vehicle.
