PURPOSE:To suppress the fatigue and improve the strength and durability of an optical fiber, by methylating the surface of a transparent glass preform produced by the thermal dehydration treatment in an atmosphere containing chlorine-based gas and spinning the methylated preform. CONSTITUTION:A transparent glass preform is dehydrated by heating in a gaseous atmosphere containing chlorine or a chlorine compound. The surface of the treated preform is methylated with dimethyldichlorosilane, etc. The preform having methylated surface is spun to obtain an optical fiber having methyl group at the outermost layer of the glass layer.
