The invention relates to a method and a device for testing the tightness of gas conduits laid underground using a drivable probe whose measuring system detects and indicates any components of the gas sought. For excluding disturbing gas influences, an additional probe is used whose range of operation lies outside the range of operation of the first probe, especially outside the gas escape ranges to be expected in the case of leaks. This additional probe is fed to a second measuring system of similar type and serves as the reference probe for the compensation of disturbing gas components.
