A device for roughening the side edges of the shoe shaft of a shoe unit has a circumferential roughening tool which, by means of a movement arrangement, is moved along a preprogrammed path around the shoe unit which is mounted on a shoe support. At the same time, the roughening tool is mounted pivotably about three axes which intersect at a point so that it can be optimally adjusted, in any working position, to the spatial alignment of the shoe shaft. This adjustment is programmable, to which end a programme control arrangement is provided which controls the entire work sequence automatically.
