In a method for determining the speed of a machine which is provided with a drive device and a speed sensor, where a nominal speed value is pre-determined for the drive and an actual value can be obtained from the speed sensor, the nominal value is supplied to a mathematical model of the control system formed by the drive and the machine. An estimated actual value is provided at the output of the model. The difference between the measured actual value and the estimated actual value is formed.
