The chair has three upholstered elements to support the patient: a back support element (2), seat (3) and a leg and foot support (4,5). The seat is linked to the main framework (6) by a scissor jack assembly (30), and can be raised or lowered by a pushrod motor (12) via the elbow levers (21) which form part of the scissor jack. The back support (2) is pivoted on brackets (23) which are connected to the main framework (6). The push-rod output screw (13) of the motor is coupled by a threaded bush (15) and lever (16) to the back support (2). The lower end (54) of the back support is coupled by levers (32) to the leg support (4,5), so that the leg support rises as the back support is lowered.
