In order to analyse substances with a universally usable method, it is proposed to burn the substance sample with elementary fluorine in an excess of several moles with respect to the quantity of sample in a reactor made of pure nickel and subsequently to analyse this substance sample by the use of vibrational spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. The drawing shows a FT/IR spectrum, generated in this way, of a sample of silicon boron carbide which was previously burnt with elementary fluorine. <IMAGE>
