The invention relates to a roughening machine for the nipping edge of a lasted-on and nipped-on shoe shaft, in which the shoe unit, consisting of last, insole arranged on the last bottom and shoe shaft drawn onto the last, is located on a holding device and in particular the nipping edge turned over onto the insole is roughened all around by means of a tool in order subsequently to be stuck together durably with a sole. To rationalise the roughening process, it is proposed with the invention, that the shoe unit is moved past the working region of the machine by a timed conveyor arrangement, the shoe unit is channelled out of the timed conveyor arrangement into the working region to be worked and is subsequently channelled back into the timed conveyor arrangement, or that the shoe unit is guided through the working region of the machine by a timed conveyor arrangement and the shoe unit is worked inside the timed conveyor arrangement by the tool while the shoe unit is situated in the working region of the machine.
