To apply inscriptions disposed in a circle and the like to the visible surface near the tread of a vehicle tyre by vulcanization without having to remove the tyre from the rim, an apparatus has a rotary table (3) on which the tyre (R) to be treated is laid. The table can be set in rotation by a shaft secured to the table so as to remained fixed during rotation. A heated application wheel (19) mounted in a housing (18) acts on the tyre surface to which it is adjustably applied under pressure. A vulcanizable coloured strip applied to a backing layer and taken from a reserve is vulcanized on to the tyre below the application wheel (19) by rotation of the rotary table (3).
