A semi-permeable membrane is prepd. by casting an aq. soln. of an aromatic polyamine (I) and a polyhydric cpd. (II) on a porous support, removing excess soln. and contacting the coated support with an organic solvent soln. of an aromatic dicarboxylic or tricarboxylic acid halide (III) to form an interfacial condensation reaction prod. on the surface of the support. - The resulting composite is used at 20-150 deg.C for 10 mins. to 2 hrs. The cured membrane is washed with an alkaline cpd. at pH 9-11 and then leached with NaHSO3. (I) is piperazine, phenylene diamine or benzidine, any of which can be substd. (II) is ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol or ethylene/propylene glycol copolymer are a 4-12C glycol.
